Little Dolls of Art and Mirka Mora

This is Madeline, and you guessed it, she is another member of the SO SOPHIE Little Dolls of Art collection!



She is inspired by the art of Mirka Mora (born 1928), a prominent French-born Australian visual artist who has contributed significantly to the development of contemporary art in Australia. Her work includes paintings, sculptures and mosaics. She is a noted colourist and symbolist; her paintings are often bright and bold, drawing heavily on a recurring motifs – innocent, wide-eyed children, angels, dogs, cats, snakes and birds!



There is something about her art I love although I find it difficult to pinpoint. Her use of faces, even though they are not particularly beautiful, the recurring theme of plants, the strange animals, all portrayed in a childish like way, although, you can sense the symbolism may not be so innocent! I also enjoy the colours she uses, bold and contrasting! Very whimsical and non realistic.



Mirka was asked in an interview recently: “You paint every day don’t you?”
She replied: “Yes, first thing in the morning, and I’ve put my bed in my studio so there is no escape!” Hmmm, now that’s an idea!
