Big Magic

With temperatures outside hitting 40, 41 and 42 degrees celsius, one of the best ways to get through yet another heat wave here in Cyprus is to stay inside with the air conditioning and just read!

Don’t misunderstand me though. I’m not what you would call a prolific reader. I love the idea of reading books. I admire people who are avid readers. And although I have all the good intentions making reading a priority (I buy the books and put them on my bedside table, bookmakers and all, I even bought a special night time reading lamp), for the past couple of years I have found it rather difficult to start a book and let alone finish it!

Until, I got a copy of Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert. It had me in tears from the first couple of pages, tears of, oh my, was this book written just for me? It understood, it justified, it told me off, it said “it’s ok” and “you’re not the only one”! I finished it in less than a week!

It is a wonderful book full of advice on how to live a satisfying, creative life; a book I will surely read again and again and again! I highly recommend it for all you creatives out there, and actually, even more so for those of you who feel that they are not that creative! If you need a creative life coach with an awesome sense of humour, read this book!

Do what you love to do, and do it with both seriousness and lightness. At least then you will know that you have tried and that, whatever the outcome, you have traveled a noble path.

The universe buries strange jewels deep within us all, and then stands back to see if we can find them. The hunt to uncover those jewels—that’s creative living. The courage to go on that hunt in the first place—that’s what separates a mundane existence from a more enchanted one.

Have a magical day.
